Mairearad was one of the last baby’s to born in Dingwall Hospital in 1984. She was brought up in Achiltibuie, with the hills and beaches on her doorstep and these have become as great influence on her work.
Mairearad was educated at Achiltibuie Primary School, Ullapool High School and then went on the Plockton Music School for her sixth year. She studied French and Marketing at Strathclyde University. From the age of 8 she had regular piping tuition from Pipe Major Norman Gillies, and took part in many music classes through the Feis Rois.
Music was a huge part of her upbringing, there were some great local musicians to be inspired by whilst growing up in Achiltibuie and her parents encouraged her, and her siblings, to take in many musical events all over Scotland.
Mairearad says she has an almost unstoppable desire to compose and perform, and also to paint. The influences on her work are wide ranging – scenery, stories, places, people, cultures. Her favorite composers and musicians include Martyn Bennett, Karine Polwart, King Creosote, Bon Iver, Karen Tweed, Joan as Police Woman, and just recently she has been listening to Christine and the Queens.
The future for Mairearad is a constant development of her work, being unafraid to try new things and let them take her forward.
