An Talla Solais arose from a need: while music has traditionally flourished in the highlands, and Ullapool is a recognised hub of musical talent and growth, no dedicated space existed for the visual arts. West coast residents were out of easy reach of the best contemporary art shows and opportunities.  The newly established gallery space within the Caledonian Hotel building has given ATS the opportunity to host many exciting exhibitions and reach a wider audience. ‘Intranquility’ features a group of six artists and promises a fresh, subversive look at the word tranquility which, they say, is so often used to describe beautiful and remote locations like Ullapool.

Using this theme as a starting point the artists, who work in a range of media, have been brought together to explore less traditional approaches to landscape, creating tension and unrest and asking questions about the role of land, place and the environment in contemporary art.

Some of the artists featured – who include Katharine Aarrestad, Alastair Clark, Liz Douglas, David Faithfull, David Forster and Su Grierson – will be at the Gallery to talk about their work on Friday 24th June at 7pm.

Victoria Caine, Exhibitions Coordinator for An Talla Solais, welcomed the collaboration with the SSA. “We’re delighted to host this exhibition which will introduce this diverse group of artists from across Scotland to the local community. The theme of our exhibitions programme this year is land and landscape and these artists have produced some inspirational, diverse and exciting work.”
